Whiskeytown National Recreation Area preserves a lake, waterfalls, rugged mountains, and forest land - 97% of which burned in the 2018 Carr Fire. Though opportunities for learning about post-fire ecology are abundant, shaded places are in short supply. The park's amphitheater at Oak Bottom was too hot to use for visitor gatherings or daytime educational programs for much of the year.

With a grant from The Fund for People in Parks to the Friends of Whiskeytown, Inc., a large, permanent shade structure was installed. Under shade, ranger talks can be offered to daytime visitors and groups of individuals can gather. In addition, Friends of Whiskeytown, Inc., plans to hold music events at the amphitheater to raise money for accessible seating and sidewalks to further enhance the visitor experience.

Project Cost: $121,570                                                    Project Completed: 2024
The Fund for People in Parks: $73,469
     National Park Service: $47,786
     Friends of Whiskeytown, Inc.: $316

With over 97% of Whiskeytown burned and over 100 structures (buildings, boats, etc.) within the park destroyed, the Carr Fire was the most destructive fire in the history of the National Park System. Much of the shade for the entire recreation area was trees that have since fallen dead and been removed in areas with high visitation and picnic area amenities. This particular site had minimal shade and now has none. The Oak Bottom Amphitheater, while eligible for other funding sources, is not the highest priority for the park's funding since we have had to focus on rebuilding structures, opening up damaged trails, safety, and utility infrastructure."
